Generac iQ2000 Review

Generac IQ2000 Review – Quiet and Smart

Many people have been asking us about the Generac IQ2000, and one of the reasons is that they hear a lot about it from people around them. That said, there is a lot of misinformation regarding this generator, which is often the case with any highly marketed product.

Most people believe that all Chinese generators, i.e., all those that are manufactured in China, are of low quality. When, in fact, a good number of reputed brands of generators sold in the US are manufactured in China. However, there are Chinese brands of generators that are good but don’t have a very long service life, which is why they have a bad reputation.

Generac IQ2000 isn’t a brand that many people may have heard about, but it isn’t a low-quality one. Furthermore, what intrigued us most about the Generac IQ2000 is the fact that it looks and feels premium. At this price range, it is hard to find anything near premium. That’s what led us to get the generator to put it through its paces for this review.

The goal of our unbiased Generac IQ2000 is to ensure that users know everything they should about the generator before buying. We’ll go over their features, decibel levels and cover a few other things that all prospective buyers will want to know. That said, we urge you to do your own research too, depending on where you live. Find out if this is the best low-priced generator in your part of the world if you’re hunting for a bargain.

So, without further ado, let’s jump right into our review!

A Generator That’s Not Honda or Yamaha

Over the years, we’ve become accustomed to trusted big name and well-established brands of generators like Yamaha and Honda. However, that often leads people to overlook slightly cheaper but equally reliable generators by brands like Champion or one of the many Chinese manufacturers.

Don’t let the lower price tag of the Generac IQ2000 generator fool you into thinking that this is a poorly built machine, which will not hold up to the test of time. Unbiased reviews by people who have purchased the Generac IQ2000 can be found in abundance online. That’s why you don’t have to take the manufacturer’s word for it or even our word for it.

However, these reviews are short and don’t go over things in much detail apart from saying that they worked like a charm or were highly reliable.

Can you trust a generator like the Generac to provide backup power on demand? During our time reviewing the generator, we discovered that there was a lot more to it than a low price tag. Not only is it reliable, but it isn’t hyped like some low-priced Chinese knockoffs with similar-sounding names.

That’s why we are firmly against going out and buying a cheap Chinese generator. However, you can and should if you need a generator that’s cheap and are OK with it lasting a year or so, tops

Our First Impressions – Looks Great and Is Easy to Use

Our first impressions of the Generac IQ2000 is that it looks great and not cheap like a lot of other low-priced portable generators. In our opinion, the Generac IQ2000 inverter generator is one of the most underrated 2k watt generators that’s sold in the US.

It is immensely easy to operate this generator, which costs half the price of the same size model by Yamaha or Honda. Furthermore, it compares in performance. That said, it comes loaded with numerous neat features that make operating it more convenient.

The controls are very easy to understand. The digital readout tells you everything you need to know about runtime and load. The start, run and stop functions are clustered in a single large dial, which makes accessing them easier. Plus, there is a status light that will notify you when the oil level goes below a certain threshold or if there is a danger of the unit overloading.

Low Decibel Levels

One of the reasons why we are fans of the IQ2000 is because it is comparatively quieter than most other generators we’ve reviewed. It is arguably the quietest generator on the market. When compared to a similar-sized 1000-watt Yamaha generator, for instance, the Generac was around 50% percent quieter, at least to our ears.

Intertek did some sound testing and found that it conforms to the present ISO 9614 standards. The lab compared the Honda EU2000i to the Generac IQ2000. The Generac was around 1 dB quieter at 50% percent of the load.

However, because the study only compared these two models, it isn’t a realistic real-world representation of how quiet the Generac IQ2000 is compared to loads of other generators on the market. Then it would help if you also considered that many appliances would draw nearly 100% percent of the generator’s max power, which can cause it to run louder than perhaps the Honda EU2000i that’s operating under the same load. Plus, sound levels will vary depending on how far you are from the generator and ambient noise levels.

Easy to Carry for Most People

Now one of the things we were curious about is how much fuel the Generac IQ2000 consumed and if the generator could be easily ported around.

In terms of dimensions, the generator is pretty easy to handle with anyone who has average size hands and strength. A single person can lift it up, but so is the case with many similar size generators.

The Generac IQ2000 isn’t all that heavier than the competition. At 46.2 lbs or 20.9 kilograms, it is a hair heavier than the Yamaha EF2000iS, which weighs 43.87 lbs, which translates to 19.9 kg. That’s why many people, including ourselves, believe that the Generac inverter generator is amongst the lighter ones out there.

We like the fact that the handle is positioned above the engine, which happens to be the heaviest point of the generator as opposed to it being in the middle. If the handle, like many others, we’re smack in the center of the unit, it would be pretty hard on your wrists, as the weight would lean to the side of the engine.

In fact, it is the same weight distribution technique that Honda uses with its EU2000 line of generators.

Fuel Efficiency

Another one of the many things we loved about our time with the Generac IQ2000 is its fuel efficiency. Many readers will be excited to know that it is a comparatively fuel-efficient portable generator. The Generac IQ2000 benefits from the use of a smaller engine and some advanced alternator technology, which helps save fuel compared to many open frame generators out there.

Campers and travelers can be assured that their gallons of gasoline will go a pretty long way. It will easily power a fan, lights, laptop, etc. However, if you hook up a small portable heater or an air conditioner, then it won’t last more than 4 hours.

While the 80cc, four-cycle engine packed inside this compact generator may sound puny as compared to the 98cc in Honda’s EU20009, but the advanced alternator technology helps it perform to those high levels that people expect. But to be fair, the EU2000i is using dated technology, which is why many newer models are using advanced electronics that outdo it.

However, Generac states that the generator will efficiently run for up to 5.7 hours if the load is kept at 50% percent or 800 watts. We estimate that at 100% percent load, the generator will last for around 2 hours tops. That said, with a 1.06-gallon tank, the Generac IQ2000 generator isn’t meant to be run consistently at 100% percent load, especially if you’re trying to get the maximum out of it.

Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing dozens of generators from both Chinese manufacturers and that from Honda and Yamaha, but none mention their run time. Most manufacturers don’t tell you how much run time to expect when at 100% load; they specify a runtime that is between 25% to 50% of load, which is what makes the figures look so impressive.

That said, we’d also strongly recommend that you don’t run the generator at 100% percent load all the time and every time since it damages the engine as well as related circuitry. Not to mention that the generator will become noisier when under heavy or max loads.

Final Verdict – We Recommend the Generac IQ2000

When you consider the price, capacity, portability, and the fact that the Generac IQ2000 is extremely fuel-efficient, it is not hard to figure that it offers excellent value. The generator is extremely quiet compared to many competitors out there. When compared to similarly priced competitors, we’d say it is the quietest. In terms of pricing, it costs 50% less than the Honda EU2200i that isn’t as fuel-efficient, yet it is covered by a 3-year warranty for the home user and has a commercial warranty on the entire generator, not just the engine.

While we might have heard the name Generac for the first time, the fact is that they are not new. The company has been around for a while and has a pretty established reputation. They also have a few service centers in many major cities. So, you can be assured that if there is an issue, the company is equipped to address it. We were also impressed by the generator’s build quality. It does not feel cheap in the hands, and most people we showed it to thought it was a thousand-dollar generator. It could have been if Yamaha or Honda sold it. Also, unlike other cheap generators, the alternator and the engine are designed by the company. So, they are not sticking their logo on generic stuff they put together.
